We extend our best wishes to Year 9 pupil, Lauren Gowen, as she represents Wales on the bowling green this weekend. Lauren is a member of the -25 Ladies team and we are very proud of her achievements.

An enjoyable and worthwhile Year 11 Parents' meeting was held this week, in preparation for what will undoubtedly be a busy and important year for our Year 11 students. As well as discussing individual challenges and academic targets, there was a variety of interesting sessions, which included stress management and the importance of resilience and maintaining a healthy mind. As a school, we do our utmost to ensure the appropriate level of challenge and support for each of our students. We very much look forward to working together with Year 11 and their families during the upcoming year.

Sixth-formers joined in at a blue plaque unveiling ceremony in Treorchy in memory of and to celebrate the life of Dr John Davies, one of Wales' most famous historians. The plaque was unveiled by the deputy mayor of RCT, and members of Dr John Davies’ family. The Rhondda Civic Society organized the event.

Last week, we had the pleasure of presenting a cheque for £2000 to Dr Elin Jones, on behalf of the mental health charity ‘Hafal’. During the last few months we have, as a whole school community, been supporting this important charity. The fundraising campaign was led by Assistant Head, Mr Osian Griffith, who himself has competed in 3 triathlons and 1 Half Iron Man competition to raise money for the charity. He has been sponsored generously by the school community and staff and pupils have also taken part in numerous fundraising activities, such as the highly competitive staff ‘Tug of War’ competition.

Dr Elin Jones, on behalf of Hafal, said - “I’d like to thank the pupils and staff of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda – thank them from the bottom of my heart – for working so hard to raise money for Hafal, and for raising such an amazing sum. Many, many congratulations to you all on behalf of Hafal’s members and staff. Thank you for the money, and thank you too for raising awareness of Hafal’s work and of mental health issues. Knowing you are supporting us really lifts our spirits!”

Our congratulations and sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the charity and to Mr Griffith for leading the campaign.
