Our choir shared a truly inspirational night lately with Côr Meibion Pendyrus, Rhydian Roberts, and Alwyn Humphreys, at the Pendyrus Gala Concert in Tylorstown Leisure Centre.

The choir once again reached a prolific standard which was acknowledged by the audience and co performers. A big thanks to The Pendyrus for the invite and our strong working relationship.

Congratulations to the year 9 netball team on their outstanding performances in the Rhondda Schools Netball Tournament. Cymer 1 won 9 games and drew 1. Passion, desire, guts and determination from the girls saw them in to the semi finals against Ferndale 2 sweeping 6-1 in to the final against Ferdale 1. The final game started off in fighting spirit from both sides but an eight minute final showed Cymer 1 at their best. With a clever defensive zone set up in the middle of the court and accurate shooting, Cymer 1 were always in control of the match, taking victory with a score 5-1. Cymer 1 were also victorious in the Sporting Marvel's Rhondda Schools League, securing that victory without conceding a single game. Exceptional performance this year by: Abigail Lewis, Emily James, Seren Rowe,Ellie Morgan, Chloe Wilshire, Amelia Davies, Caitlyn Davies and Carragh Jacka. Congratulations to Amelia Davies for winning Player of the Tournament.

We had a fantastic Eisteddfod again this year! The pupils and staff competed enthusiastically for their houses and we saw amazing talents throughout the day. There was a feast of singing, recitation, dancing and playing musical instruments. One of the highlights of the day was the Chairing Ceremony. The Welsh prize was won by Stephanie Pearce and the English prize by Megan Rees. Congratulations to both of you for this fantastic achievement!

Four pupils of our sixth form represented the school lately in Eisteddfod y Dysgwyr, Cymoedd Morgannwg 2014. Seren Hâf MacMillan, Holly Avril Lewis, Chloe Stone and Abigail Murray can be seen chairing Rosa Hunt of Malta.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda year 7 and 8 rugby teams’ hosted Methodist College Belfast on Saturday the 22nd of March 2014. The games were highly competitive and demonstrated a very high standard of rugby, with MCB capturing victory in both games. It was a fantastic experience for pupils to enjoy the competitve nature of international rugby whilst also respecting and understanding each other’s culture and traditions. All teams were a credit to their recognised establishments and country. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to visit Belfast, Ireland in the near future to challenge MCB on their turf.

A year 9 & 10 girls Rugby team represented Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda, for the first time in the schools history, at the URDD National Rugby 7’s competition at Llanelli. The girls produced a fantastic series of performances to win every game at the pool stage, beating Ysgol y Strade, Bro Morgannwg and Gwyr on their way to the final. Unfortunately, an experienced Dyffryn Amman side were victorious in the final with YGCR finishing runners up in the competition. A strong determination and desire to succeed was demonstrated by every girl who competed on the day, and yet again reinforces the talent at YGCR. Congratulations Girls!

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Jordan Withers, Year 9, who came 1st in Welsh Boxing Championships Finals on the 1st February 2014. Jordan was victorious in the 48kg category of the competition that was held in Swansea. Well done Jordan – a great achievement – we look forward to seeing you go from strength to strength.
