On Tuesday, 11.11.14, a Tag Rugby event was organised by our Rugby Development Officer, Ben Daniels.  Our feeder schools were invited to compete and the event was a great opportunity to display Year 5 and 6 pupils’ skills on the field.  Many thanks to our feeder schools for supporting this event and congratulations to all teams who competed.

Many congratulations to all members of the school's First Rugby team on a sensational start to their Welsh Cup challenge this year. The team won against a strong Radyr Comprehensive side, 36-6. The game was broadcast in full on S4C's 'Rygbi Pawb', with the standard of play of the highest level. We wish them well as they progress in the competition.

Congratulations also to three members of the squad who have been chosen to form part of the Welsh Academicals Team this year – Anthony Pearce, Jacob Lloyd and Harvey Connolly. Fantastic boys!

Year 12 pupils travelled to Cardiff on the 15th of October to visit the Sixth Form Conference on 'Religion in the Contemporary World'. The Conference was held in Cardiff City Hall organised by the School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The purpose of the visit was to address a range of themes that arise when discussing the influence of religion on society and contemporary culture.

In addition, there was an opportunity for pupils to listen to well-known BBC journalist Huw Edwards, who is very interested in the topics covered. He agreed to give a keynote presentation on the topic 'Religion and the News of Tomorrow' as well as holding a 'question and answer' session with the pupils.

Many thanks to U-Design Embroidery for supplying our senior rugby team at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda with a new 1st team kit. The squad were presented with the new rugby kit ahead of their 1st competitive Welsh Schools league game at the beginning of term. Building on the success of previous years, Cymer’s first XV rugby team got their 2014/15 season under way with a convincing 22-0 win away at Lewis Boys Pengam. A combination of strong leadership and powerful ball carrying was demonstrated by new Captain Anthony Pearce and was supported well by vice-captain Jacob Lloyd who was orchestrating the play from outside-half. Credit must also be paid to a number of Year 11 debutants, with notable performances from Iestyn Harris, Jack Perkins and Cole Swannack. Cymer's 2nd league game saw them take on local neighbours Tonypandy. In a dominant display, Cymer’s first XV secured a 55-0 home victory before reaching the half-time whistle. Already, the team have demonstrated quality performances based on powerful, high tempo rugby with a willingness to play an open and attacking brand.

Tributes must also go to Year 7, 8 and 9 rugby teams on a successful start to the year. All year groups across the school are currently unbeaten on the field of play and have performed with great passion and pride. The current success experienced by all teams is a reflection of pupils’ hard work, commitment and dedication to fulfilling their potential in the sport. It also highlights the vast array of talent, which YGCR has at its disposal, across numerous age groups. A special mention also goes to teaching staff and recently appointed Rugby Development Officer Ben Daniels on their determination and desire to achieve the highest standards on and off the pitch.
